Oh, and its not Old English. Old english was actually written in "insular script" which is interesting to look at as well. It spread from Ireland and to some extent Scotland into England and later europe, and actually pre dates the Blackletter script by a few hundred years. Thats enough Besserwisser commenting.

For sans serifs, or gothic typefaces, see: Helvetica, Arial, Futura, Akzidenz grotesk, Trade gothic, Gotham, Univers and Frutiger etc.
For serifs, or roman typefaces, see: Sabon, Garamond, Times new roman, Baskerville, Caslon, Didot and Bodoni etc.

Gothic typography, on the other hand, is a dated term for sans-serif typefaces, meaning "without serif", serifs being the crossbars at the end of letter shapes as seen in eg Times New Roman; Its named so because american type setters needed a term to differentiate sans serif typefaces from serif typefaces, commonly known as "roman". Sans-serifs gained popularity in germany in 1920-30 and were so named "gothic" because of the gothic heritage in germany and as a counter to "roman" style.

Hi, you're right and you're wrong. This is a gothic script, which is different from gothic typography.
This, Gothic script or Blackletter is a style that emerged in western europe around 1100 bc. The reason its called "gothic" is because renaissance historians in italy differentiated it from Carolingian script, which was much clearer; and grouped scripts such as Visigothic, Merovingian and Lombardian together as "gothic", because they thought them "barbarian" in their elaborate shape. cont...
