I don't think that's exactly the story. I think the boy never had the chance to know the world "of before" - or at least he was very young when the world was destroyed. That's why he's so excited when Lana brings the items, especially when he hears the recording with the children. He's so curious and so eager to play "with them" that he decides to go outside. And his curiosity and imagination kind of push him to take off his mask to play with them in the world of before. But obviously he dies.
