I think so,singer who have to sing to a big audience in theaters have to pronounce different so may be that is the reason.

it could be something about singers having to not pronounce the word correctly so that it sounds correct to the audience. like singing 'windows' instead of 'wind blows' also makes it easier to hit the notes etc.

I think he pronounces Maria just fine, and I'm English... He's Scottish-American. And if you've ever tried to sing a flat "A" sound, a lot of the time it comes out really nasally which is why people tend to sing the "A" sound more "aaaah" like and less "ahhh" like.

He's a West End star :) He's been in Anything Goes, Phantom of the Opera, and countless other productions. Oh and he played the lead Albin in La Cage Aux Folles in 2009. And if you like the musical Wicked, you should look up "The Doctor And I". It's a remake of The Wizard And I and it's wonderful.
