That ols Ammeter came from a water pumping station. I have two others also in service in the house. They featured in some of the older meter video's. That is 40 / 1 Amp CT ratio extended to 240 Amps to allow for motor starting. The SPA 01 didn't record much at all. At switch on the electronics takes 2 seconds or so to get ready. By then the cap had popped and current was back to zero. The jars of smoke are fore sale on xbay "grin"

Here's hoping for a good 2012! I'm loving that Old-Skool amp meter. That's a bit like something from Back To The Future! :-D Proper cool. Keep that, & make sure that it doesn't get popped. The pulse light on the SPA 01 though: I couldn't really see it, or anything once the jar filled with magic smoke. It would've been a good idea to keep the smoke, because if you've got a cap inside something that isn't working too well, you'll have a jar of spare smoke to put in the faulty cap. LOL! -BBD.

A good idea for your kind of stuff might be a Construction site transformer, small one, 750va or so, 2 maybe, if you can get to car boot sales etc. Plugging 1 into the other would allow you varying voltages from 11v up to 110. (can't connect them in series because of the earthed secondary, but you could connect two together one after the other to get down to 11v by feeding the primary of one from a single 55v secondary).

Technically, it is steam, not smoke; if you blow up a capacitor in a sealed jar, the electrolyte (basically water with dissolved salts) will recondense just like steam would. Also, if you are worried about inhaling electrolyte, you'd probably want to get rid of all electronics from your home since electrolytic capacitors gradually dry out and loose electrolyte, not very fast (usually) but there are probably hundreds in an average home and that adds up.
